In early April, flights and ships to Con Dao have always been full of domestic and international tourists. As reported by hotel managers, Con Dao resorts have virtually run out of rooms during recent days. Especially, in upcoming holidays, April 30 and May 1, all rooms have been booked since one month ago. It is estimated that the number of tourists to Con Dao is increasing significantly including individuals and groups of tourists. Con Dao Island is becoming a bright spot on the world tourist map with thousands of international tourists having come here in last year.
That strong development is thanked to the master plan on tourism services improvement of Con Dao People’s Committee which was researched and established since May 2006. Accordingly, Con Dao is built into an island with developed economy, services and tourism according to international standards. To implement that goal in limited-fund condition, authorities chose key fields which are of great importance to invest in such as upgrading transportation system to attractions, improving telecom infrastructure and diversifying vehicles taking tourists to the island. Thus, tourists visiting Con Dao can transport easily and communicate as conveniently as in the mainland. In 2013, the island attracted 90,000 tourists, of which more than 19,000 were foreign tourists, far exceeding the plan for the period 2011 – 2015. Income per capita of local people in 2013 has quadrupled compared to that in 2006, from $ 769 to $ 3,110 per year.
In the last years, Con Dao tourism has received many supported policies from the government through investment capital and incentives. In addition, there are a large number of companies and individuals who love this island voluntarily proposed to authorities to sponsor capital for constructing and reforming historical heritages. Grant programs include Con Dao talent development fund, tourism ambassador program, and social welfare programs for the elderly and disadvantaged children, and so on.
Con Dao has more and more advantages for tourism development. Specifically, Con Dao National Park with conditions favorable for marine species like sea turtle, dolphins, sea cow… has been recognized as the world’s Ramsar site and the first Ramsar sea site of Vietnam. It is also licensed for leasing forest environment to organize travel. Prior to that event, Con Dao Prison system has been approved as a special National Monument by the Prime Minister. In the near future, Con Dao will construct a new pier which can receive high-speed trains and build two ships for the travel needs of tourists. With several tourism advantages, Con Dao is expected to develop into a tourist center of Vietnam and even of Southeast Asia in the next few years.
