Recently, there is a decision on upgrading Nguyen Hue Flower Street to become a walking square in Ho Chi Minh City. The project costs about 428 billion dong. Also, there is an underground station built here.

Nguyen Hue Street, the main boulevard in the center of Ho Chi Minh City, will be upgraded to become a "walking square". The street will be decorated with art lighting system, fountains and underground lighting control center. To accelerate the upgrading project and embellish Nguyen Hue Boulevard to finish on the 40th anniversary of the liberation of the Southern Vietnam 30-4-2015, on September 9, HCM City authorities proposed the Government for designating contractor in the form of EPC to complete the work in the shortest time. EPC form means that the contractor to conduct the entire project from design, machinery supply and equipment to construction, commission and handover.

According to the notification of the Government Office on September 22, Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai approved Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee for the selection of the EPC contractor to improving project level and Nguyen Hue Street. The government authorized the Chairman of Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee for the decision of selecting contractors in this particular case to have enough ability and experience to implement project, assure quality and complete timely. Talking with The Online Saigon Economics Times, Mr. Le Quyet Thang, Director of urban traffic management No. 1 under Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transportation said that currently, the first stage of the project from Le Thanh Ton Street to Le Loi Street was commenced and scheduled for completion in March 2015.

And, the second stage from Le Loi Street to Ton Duc Thang Street after the government will be conducted in early October and completed in April 2015. According to project planning and the architectural space, the entire existing Nguyen Hue Street will be upgraded and rehabilitated to become one of the most outstanding walking streets in Ho Chi Minh with the length of 670 meters, the width of 64 meters and synced with construction area pf new President Ho Chi Minh monument. Constructing items include upgrading, renovating existing roads and sidewalks by natural stone, rebuilding works of infrastructural system as water and electricity supply, greenery area, public lighting and art lighting...), fountain, and underground lighting control centers, etc.

The total investment of upgrading Nguyen Hue Street is 428 billion dong. With so many items to be built, the municipal government asked the Government to allow complying with a special mechanism to shorten the preparation time, to start early and finish in the shortest time. Currently, the roundabout area of Nguyen Hue Street is being surrounded by barrier to construct the underground station of metro line 1 – Ben Thanh - Suoi Tien, and upgrade Nguyen Hue Street. To reduce the pressure of traffic in downtown, the city government also decided not to build the underground parking area in Nguyen Hue and Ton Duc Thang streets. Instead, an underground parking lot under Le Loi, Ham Nghi streets and area around Quach Thi Trang Square will be taken into consideration.

The conclusion of the Chairman of HCMC People's Committee, Nguyen Huu Tin on planning the underground space of Nguyen Hue Street and Ton Duc Thang Street has been recently sent to the Urban Traffic Management Zone 1 (under Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transportation). According to this conclusion, HCM City authorities requested the Department of Planning and Architecture to collaborate with the Department of Transportation and related entities not arrange underground parking lot under Nguyen Hue Street and Ton Duc Thang Street according to plan of 1/2000 subdivision approved. Because the area of Nguyen Hue Flower Street is fenced, the upcoming Lunar New Year 2015's flower street will be held at Ham Nghi Street.
