The recommend named “golden route” from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City and return has been proposed in 2012 by Dr. Tran Dinh Ba, the Association of Vietnam economy and Science. According to Ba, the current Hanoi – Ho Chi Minh City route is the longer route, wasting 26 minutes, averagely wasting 25% production costs, burning over $ 300 million of airlines on domestic routes each year. To save the production cost for airlines and reduce price ticket for passengers, the straight route over Laos and Cambodia is the most optimum solution.
However, at that time, due to the high costs of transit over Laos and Cambodia, this recommendation was assessed to be not economic and efficient. Simultaneously, his evaluation in the length of route was not absolutely correct. In addition, a number of military experts concerned that if the plan had been conducted, the domestic airspace would have become the international airspace, thereafter, problems aroused including flight safety management. Due to those unsolved worries, his proposal was rejected.
Earlier this year, Dr. Tran Dinh Ba continued to send his proposal to the government and recommending measures to renew airline industry for stable growth by applying straight routes with high economic efficiency, saving fuel and time, and benefits for government taxes. After careful research, on August 21st, the Minister of Transport, Mr. Dinh La Thang had a talk with the Deputy Minister of Cambodia, Mr, Sok An, within the framework of his visit to Cambodia. The two agreed to facilitate the establishment of the Hanoi – Ho Chi Minh City route over Cambodian airspace and assign relevant agencies to research the specific implementation.
The two sides also agreed to create favorable conditions for airlines of Vietnam and Cambodia to open new routes between 2 countries in the near future. For instance, Vietnam Airlines opens route Phu Quoc – Siem Reap, VietJet Air opens Hanoi – Siem Reap, Ho Chi Minh City – Siem Reap and Ho Chi Minh City – Phnom Penh.
Earlier, Vietnam and Laos have reached an agreement in opening new route Hanoi – Ho Chi Minh City over Lao airspace. The scheme of this new route has been completed by the Department of Aviation and will be submitted to the Vietnamese government for approval. Talking to presses, the Minister Dinh La Thang said that the straight route over Laos and Cambodia will shorten the flight time and save fuel costs for airlines.
