Developing MICE tourism in Vietnam

Exploited since 2008, MICE tourism in Vietnam has attracted a large number of tourists annually. Vietnam is assessed to possess many potentialities to develop MICE strongly in the future.

MICE tourism (tourism combines with meetings, incentives, conferences, exhibitions) has begun to be exploited by Vietnamese tourism companies since 2008, of which Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City are considered the highlight having the ability to effectively exploit MICE.

Currently, there are a large number of destinations in Vietnam that are developing MICE such as Halong Bay, Ninh Binh, Da Nang, Nha Trang, Dalat, and so on. According to many prestigious surveys, Vietnam is in possession of several enterprises operating in MICE tourism sector that have achieved positive business results and growth. As a destination famous for beautiful beaches, majestic mountains, cultural and natural heritages which have been recognized as world heritages, and luxury hotels and resorts honored by TripAdivisor, the largest travel website worldwide, Vietnam is emerging as a venue for important international conferences, seminars, and events. Several famous Destinations in Vietnam are always chosen for a MICE tour, such as Halong Bay, Phu Quoc Island, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, Hue, Nha Trang, and Hanoi. Those are ideal destinations to hold conferences, events combining with sightseeing, picnic, or teambuilding. Therefore, in recent years, international and domestic tourists taking part in MICE tours in Vietnam through travel companies are constantly increasing.

During low season, the number of individual tourists decreases. Tourists booking tours are mainly enterprises that want to hold conferences, seminars combining with travel. To stimulate tourism in low season as well as to promote advantages of MICE tourism, travel companies are actively promoting cooperation to provide the policy of preferential price and attractive promotions. Simultaneously, they also focus on improving service quality to attract visitors.

According to experts, MICE tourism brings the revenue 6 times higher than normal tourism types because MICE delegations generally have large number of tourists and high consumption. Averagely, a MICE tourist from Europe spends $ 700 to $ 1000 per day, one form Asia spends over $ 400 per day. In comparison with the cost that an individual tourist spends a day, it is absolutely much higher. Aware of the trend and huge benefit which MICE tourism brings, travel companies in Vietnam have diversify products through developing MICE tours in order to limit the impact of seasonality in tourism, simultaneously, to remain sustainable development in low season. Because MICE tourism is quite a new field that is emerging in recent years, tourism companies also strengthen their cooperation and connection to enhance organizational capacity, increase competitiveness on the international market with a view to attract important major events to Vietnam, and aim to develop Vietnam tourism in a more professional manner.
