Vietnamese Women’s Museum which keeps images and items describing Vietnamese people’s life from the past to present was voted as one of the 25 most attractive museums in Asia by Tripadvisor in 2013.

The year 2013 has almost passed with many tourism events in Hanoi. In the first 9 months of the year, the city received 13 million visitors, up 11% y.o.y. This is an impressive figure in the context of economic recession. Hanoi has become one of the most exciting cities in Asia with millions of international visitors every year. The city is attractive with unique ancient houses, crowded Old Quarter, tasty traditional cuisine and friendly people. Places which give people better insights into Vietnamese history and culture in the city especially the museums, also attract many visitors.

This year, two museums in Hanoi have been listed in the top 25 most attractive museums in Asia by Tripadvisor.com, a famous visitor website. This is the second consecutive time Vietnamese Women’s Museum has been voted by the biggest and most prestigious tourism website in the world. This year, the museum ranks 11th out of 25 most popular museums in Asia. “Worth visiting, touching stories” was the message that TripAdvisor wants to convey to visitors when talking about the museum. In 2012, the museum was voted as the most attractive among 80 destinations in Hanoi. It still holds the first position currently.

You will see the differences when going through the gate. A fountain, green trees and different kinds of flowers have replaced the iron fence normally seen in other museums. You will be impressed by the glass wall at the museum yard. The vivid colors hide great charm that inspires you to explore the space. This change started on October 20, 2010, when the managers closed it for four years for restoration and upgradation of the display system. Established in 1987 under the Vietnam Women’s Union, Vietnamese Women’s Museum is aimed at studying, preserving, and displaying tangible and intangible historical and cultural heritages of Vietnamese women and the Vietnam Women’s Union. This is also a cultural center of Vietnamese and international women for the target of equality,

The museum just covers totally 2,000sq.m, but it gives visitors interesting experience. The items are displayed in three subjects: Women in families, Women in history and Women’s fashion. Each subject is divided into smaller categories with more than 1,000 items. The items have helped visitors explore fine personalities of Vietnamese women.

Vietnamese Women’s Museum has impressive architecture with 4 storeys and thousands of documents and items. It took the managers nearly 10 years to collect beautiful images and typical costumes of Vietnamese women and display here.

To have a modern display system inferior to no museum in the world, the managers and specialists of the museum had to work in nearly 10 years, 7 of which were for studying, to make decisions on items, subjects, stories, information written on panels, interior design, graphics, light and sound. The museum has successfully held many exhibitions to serve Vietnamese and international visitors every year. It has also developed a collection of more than 25,000 documents and items related to Vietnamese women.

This creative and modern way of displaying the items and images make every trip of visitors more interesting. All items displayed in the museum are of great sense of humanity and revitalize images of women in all aspects of life. This creative space makes visitors feel like they were watching historical films in which images of women in family, women in history and women’s fashion are vividly resurrected.

The museum is decorated with many bright walls, which make visitors feel like they were entering in a vivid and colorful magazine. Each storey is a chapter of a book with many images. Visitors can feel with their hands and their eyes by turning page after page with many images of Vietnamese women.

Apart from the permanent exhibitions, the museum also holds special exhibition to impress visitors. Such special exhibitions as “Stories about single moms in Tien Minh”, “Strokes of gratitude”, “Flowers and life”, or “Worshipping mother goddess” has made the museum familiar to the public and to the contemporary cultural life.

Before holding any special exhibition, the museum managers have to focus on choosing display content in many months, referring to constructive ideas of experts and researchers. They all work for the same purpose of making images of Vietnamese women more real attractive and diverse.

These are images of a special exhibition held at Vietnamese Women’s Museum. “I + - Home is where there is love”, is an exhibition using installation art with the participation of ethnic minority groups of disadvantageous position in society.

With the support of Vietnamese Women’s Museum, these volunteers hold this exhibition to convey messages about the people in need of society’s care. This year, the museum has a space for exhibitions of contemporary artists with subject related to modern Vietnamese social life.
