Nguyen Trung Truc Temple is located at No. 8 Nguyen Cong Tru Street, Vinh Thanh ward, Rach Gia city, Kien Giang province. The temple is located opposite the tranquil river, near the water front and shaded by the cool green Bodhi trees. This is the largest temple in the 9 temples in Phu Quoc worshiping Nguyen Trung Truc. Despite his own short life, Nguyen Trung Truc has turned into the dazzling history of the nation's history as well as Vietnamese legend. The temples worshiping Nguyen Trung Truc have been built in many places in the South Vietnam such as Long An, Rach Gia, Phu Quoc..., yet the temple in Rach Gia is considered the largest one. The temple was built in 1964 and inaugurated in 1970. The temple retains its appearance of Tam (Three) shape (letter in Kanji) with the three-gate entrance and a stone incense burner in front of the sanctum. On the roof of the temple is decorated with the motifs of 2 dragons flanking pearls along with the image of dragon covered the tile roofs' angles. All arrays of reliefs are made of cement with colorful pottery shards. The entrance of the temple includes 2 pillars sculpted with dragon winding around from bottom, which symbolizes the power and strength. The impressive design has contributed to bring Nguyen Trung Truc Temple to become one of the most attractive tourist attractions in Phu Quoc.
Entering through the entrance, tourists will catch the bronze statue of Nguyen Trung Truc. The statue was formerly placed in front of Rach Gia Market. It is now repainted with reddish brown and moved inside here. The statue is extremely stately, lively with the faithful and indomitable spirit as his personality before sacrificing. Within the campus covered the temple, there is also his tomb built in 1986 along with his statue. Setting foot on Nguyen Trung Truc Temple, visiting the simple temple, tourists admire more and more the hero Nguyen Trung Truc, who comes from an idyllic fishing village but brave to fight against enemy with the admirable patriotism. The temple houses numerous ancestral tablets with 3 worshiping places inside. There are the statue of Nguyen Trung Truc in the center, Nguyen Hien Dieu, Lam Quang Ky on the left and the statue of God Nam Hai on the right. Though Nguyen Trung Truc Temple is not the oldest Phu Quoc temples, it is truly the center of the cultural activities of the locals. The image of Nguyen Trung Truc has deeply influenced into the mind and spirit of the people here. Not only is it the place for pilgrims to visit and pray, the temple is a home for people to do merit and virtue. There are traditional medicinal clinics free for everyone here. The temple is always full of people for healing, taking medicine and do merit.
In particular, Nguyen Trung Truc Temple is also home to hold a solemn festival commemorating his sacrifice on 27th, 28th, 29th August in the lunar calendar yearly. The locals gather together to make vegetarian dishes... to welcome pilgrims setting foot on here. In the days of the anniversary celebration, Rach Gia City also organizes various activities such as fair trading, cultural exchange of 3 ethnic people, namely Kinh - Hoa - Khmer, folk games, martial arts demonstration programs, cooking contest, unicorn dancing competition or drop the lanterns on Kien River. It is the impressive characteristics have contributed to bring Nguyen Trung Truc Temple to become one of the most appealing tourist Phu Quoc attractions.
An obvious beautiful feature in Nguyen Trung Truc traditional festival is the multi-ethnic minorities, multi-beliefs and multi-religions. Participating in Nguyen Trung Truc Festival, people also seem to feel excited like forgetting daily worries and toil to integrate into the spiritual atmosphere of the festival. At the official festival, the locals hold the rites and reenact the battle of sinking Espe’rance battleship of France on Nhat Tao River. In addition, the festival also organizes traditional cultural activities such as sailing, chess... These traditional activities contribute to bring the temple to become an indispensable tourist site in Phu Quoc tours alluring tourists.
The tomb and temple of Nguyen Trung Truc were recognized as national cultural historical relics on 6th December 1989. In 2012, the province conducted to repair and renovate Nguyen Trung Truc historical relics to deserve an indispensable tourist attraction in Kien Giang. It is home to preserve the trophies, memorabilia, and artifacts of the life and illustrious victories of the national hero Nguyen Trung Truc. The temple thus displays its significant contribution in promoting Phu Quoc tourism closer to domestic and international tourists.
