Xam singing is a type of Vietnamese folk music which is popular in the Northern region. Currently, Xam artists in Hanoi have released a music video about the East Sea issue, a hot issue attracting the attention of both the domestic and international.
As popular genre of folk art, “xam” singing is not selective about performers and performance spaces. Over the time, “xam” singing still keeps its spiritual values. It is the melody of soul of Vietnamese people through different generations.
Previously, Hanoian could enjoy xam singing in the trams or anywhere on the streets. Xam songs about life were so familiar to ordinary people. As life has changed, Hanoi xam singing used to fall into oblivion. However, it is now restored right in Hanoi.
Xam singing is one of unique traditional folk music genres in Vietnam. The art has been existed for 700 years along with the ups and downs of Vietnam history. Xam singing is recognized as an intangible cultural world heritage by UNESCO.
