Quoc Hoc High School was established under the decree dated 17th September in the 8th year of Thanh Thai's reign (1896) and Decree on 18th November 1896 by Governor of Indochina. Located on the bank of Perfume River, Quoc Hoc High School Hue is situated on Le Loi Street, Vinh Ninh Ward, Hue city, Thua Thien - Hue Province. Quoc Hoc School is one of the most famous high schools in Hue established on 23rd October 1896. The high school was constructed on the place of a previous squadron headquarters – a royal navy headquarters (1806 or the 5th year of Gia Long's reign). As National-level historical relics, Quoc Hoc High School is the 3rd most ancient high schools in Vietnam after Le Quy Don High School in Ho Chi Minh City and Nguyen Dinh Chieu High School in My Tho. Quoc Hoc High School has long become one of the bewitching tourist attractions in Hue alluring the great number of tourists.
When newly built, the high school includes 2 thatched blocks of building with bricked wall and wood pillars overlooking Perfume River and laying parallel with Jules Ferry Road, Le Loi Street as today. The gate was constructed with 2 floors, 2nd of which was home to hang the red lacquer trimmed with gold plaque engraved “Quoc Hoc High School" in Vietnamese. There were 2 porcelain dragons embossed at the both sides. The decorating patterns were strongly influenced with Oriental architecture. In the early 20th century, the high school was rebuilt in the style of French architecture mixing two cultures of Asia and Europe. Quoc Hoc High School highlights in Hue thanks to its red, French architecture combining with Oriental bell tower retaining royal court style. The architecture has been virtually preserved intactly up to now. The high school has been renamed over historical periods, namely École Supérieure Primaire, often known as Quoc Hoc High School (1896-1936), Khai Dinh High School (1936-1954), Ngo Dinh Diem High School (1955-1956).
