Vietnam holds International Chemistry Olympiad

On July 21, 2014, Minister of Education and Training, Mr. Pham Vu Luan said that Vietnam is so delighted to welcome excellent chemistry students from different nations to participate in the International Chemistry Olympiad 2014.

The 46th International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) will be held in Hanoi, Vietnam from July 20 to 29, 2014. Vietnam National University of Science, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, and Hanoi National University of Education were assigned to co-organize this event. According to the IChO Regulations, each country will have the maximum of 4 students, 4 expert advisors, and 2 scientific observers. In the International Chemistry Olympiad 2014, Vietnam welcomes the participation of 77 delegations from 77 nations. Russia is a nation having the largest members (12 members). On the other hand, Cuba has only two members taking part in the competition. Vietnam, the host country, has eight members including 4 students and 4 experts. As estimated, International Chemistry Olympiad in Vietnam attracted 524 international guests including 291 students.

According to the schedule, the theoretical exam will be held at Vietnam National Convention Center from 8.30 am to 2.30 pm on July 27. Candidates will be separated into two rooms. The practical exam will be taken place in Hanoi National University of Education from 9.00 am to 2.00 pm on July 23. Candidates will be arranged in eight rooms.

 

Gold medal of International Chemistry Olympiad

 

The International Chemistry Olympiad is a chemistry exam for high school students under the age of 20 from different countries in the world. IChO is often held annually since 1968 (except from 1971). The activities of IChO follow the IChO Regulations recognized by the International Council and under the general direction of the IChO Executive Committee. Vietnam has officially attended the International Chemistry Olympiad since 1996 and often achieved high rankings. The objectives of IChO are to strengthen international exchanges in field of Chemistry. The contest is organized to encourage students who have the passion for Chemistry and enhance the independent learning ability for students. The contest also aims to strengthen cooperation and mutual understanding for young generation among different countries in the world.

"I am really happy to come back Hanoi and very impressive with the careful preparation of the country for the contest. Besides, I also had chance to meet some respected Vietnamese chemists as well.", Chairman of the IChO Committee, Professor Peter Wothers shared. In addition, Mr. Wothers also expressed excitement when travelling among Vietnam universities by motorbike and experiencing the chaotic traffic conditions in Vietnam. According to Dr. Bui Duy Cam, the International Chemistry Olympiad in Vietnam has some important meanings. This event contributes to implement foreign and integration policies of Vietnam government, encourage learning movements, especially chemistry learning movement,  foster talents for the country, and improve Vietnam education as well. This is also an opportunity to promote Vietnam image, traditional culture, people, etc. to international friends.

 

Vietnamese students get high awards in International Chemistry Olympiad

 

During the contest, Vietnam will organize a variety of activities for international guests to visit beautiful landscapes and cultural heritages of Hanoi, such as Temple of Literature, Hanoi, Imperial Citadel of Thang Long, Hoan Kiem Lake, Vietnam Museum of Ethnology and some other attractions in the north Vietnam including Hung Temple, Viet Phu Thanh Chuong, Bai Dinh pagoda, Trang An, Halong, Bat Trang… In addition, many special cultural activities will be performed like water puppet repertoire at Thang Long Water Puppetry Theatre.
